KUKU YALANJI BASKET WEAVING

Join Ngamumu founder and director Merindi Schrieber for an afternoon of yarning, laughing and weaving at this outdoor workshop where you will learn how to make a traditional woven basket.

Kuku Yalanji Weaver Merindi Schrieber is a story teller who uses different art forms to tell stories of her land and culture. Merindi is well-known for her singing abilities but has also learnt the art of weaving traditional balji (baskets) from her grandmother, utilising fibres from her rainforest home.

Merindi will be sharing a traditional weaving technique that she utilities to make baskets, mats and jewellery. Once a prohibited practice in her homeland, Merindi now continues the journey of cultural maintenance and bringing the weave back to her community.

This workshop will take place simultaneously and side-by-side with Woven Jewellery Making with Lia Pa’apa’a so that attendees can gather, share and learn as one.
